Galvanised Wire Mesh
When the cost per metre decides the job on a long run, galvanised woven wire mesh is the cheapest option that does the same work.
On galvanised woven mesh the zinc coating sits directly on the wire with no plastic in between. At the same aperture that means a lower cost, and over site perimeters that run for kilometres the difference adds up quickly.
Zinc does not protect only by acting as a barrier. When the coating is scratched and the steel beneath is exposed, the surrounding zinc is sacrificed electrochemically and stops the steel from rusting; small surface injuries therefore do not shorten the life of the mesh.
The price of an uncoated surface is how it looks. The matt grey patina that forms over time keeps protecting the steel but takes the bright finish away. Where appearance leads, on estate and garden boundaries, we suggest PVC coated mesh; out on the land, galvanised.
Frequently asked questions
Both have a galvanised wire core; the PVC coated one has an extra plastic layer drawn over it. PVC gives longer life and a tidier appearance, while galvanised lets you build a longer run on the same budget.
On short runs and level ground a galvanised tube post is practical. On long stretches of land a concrete post both lowers the cost and asks for no maintenance for years, since corrosion is not a concern.
